Troponin enzyme levels increase due to myocardial cell damage which occurs, for example, following prolonged ischemic cardiac episodes. Troponin enzymes will be elevated if the heart has suffered damage and sufficient time passes (hours) for there to be a measurable increase in troponin levels. Troponin level increases are not measurable immediately after a patient suffers cardiac damage.
