Atopic Dermatitis

Atopic dermatitis is a term used to describe a type of eczema characterized by involvement of the flexures of the arms and legs and associated with an atopic diathesis. An atopic diathesis consists of allergies, asthma, hay fever, and an increased incidence of contact dermatitis and an increased tendency to react to irritants applied to the skin.

Treatment includes avoiding scratching, using antihistamines, keeping the area clean and protected, and restricting prolonged exposure to water. Although atopic dermatitis requires a heightened avoidance of potential irritants and allergens, it does not change the treatment requirements for the eczema, which is the underlying problem.
