In general, the standard of care regarding placement of image-guided drainage catheter placement requires the use of such medical imaging to provide accurate identification of the drainage target, whether it be within an internal organ or a cavity adjacent to an organ. In this case, the doctor failed to accurately identify such a target, either the renal collecting system or a definite abscess cavity with ultrasound or fluoroscopy, thereby deviating from standard of care for subsequent drainage catheter placement.
