Human papilloma virus (HPV) is known to be the cause of genital warts, otherwise known as condyloma and condolomata, which is the most common sexually transmitted disease in the United States, affecting well over half of the US population at some point in their lives. Infection with HPV can result in warts, which often involute and resolve on their own. Condyloma may resolve on their own or be treated chemically, surgically, or thermally and once treated there may be no evidence of its presence. For this reason, it is usually not possible to determine who infected whom with condyloma.
