The Heimlich Maneuver is performed with the rescuer standing behind the choking victim. Abdominal thrusts are not recommended for children under 1 year of age because of the potential to cause more injury. Complications are common in children because of their small size and the strength of an adult. Someone who is not well-trained administering the Heimlich maneuver may incorrectly place their hands and can cause damage to internal organs. Damage to the intestines which is not uncommon in such situations.
