Forensic Pathology Scope: Conditions, Diseases, Treatments, and Procedures
Forensic pathology is a branch of pathology that investigates and studies the cause, manner, and time of death and injury. It is a subfield of pathology and related to clinical pathology, but there are some distinct differences. In forensic pathology, the focus is on the determination of cause and manner of death and the interpretation of evidence that may be found in the autopsy or scene investigation.
The scope of forensic pathology is broad and includes aspects of anatomy, toxicology, chemistry, anthropology, odontology (the study of teeth), pharmacology, toxicology, physiology, criminology, and general medical knowledge. Forensic pathologists are experts in the evaluation of wounds (including from gunshots and other weapons), fractures, and other medical conditions that can lead to death. They examine postmortem specimens to determine if any injury or disease could have contributed to an individual's death and to determine the correct classification of death.
Forensic pathologists are often called upon to investigate suspicious deaths or homicides, as well as deaths that occur in police custody or in prison. They can also help identify victims of disasters such as fires, floods, and earthquakes. In addition to examining deceased individuals for evidence of disease or injury that led to death, forensic pathologists are also responsible for determining time of death, which can be critical in homicide cases.
Qualifications, Training, and Certifications
Forensic pathology is a highly specialized area of medicine and requires extensive training beyond medical school.
To become a forensic pathologist, a physician must complete a four-year pathology residency program. After completing the residency, they may then complete a fellowship training in forensic pathology.

These include medical odontology, which focuses on the examination of teeth in order to help identify individuals; anthropology, which studies the human skeleton; and, toxicology, which studies the effects of drugs and poisons.

Forensic pathologists may also be called upon to provide expert testimony in other medical-legal cases, such as those involving wrongful death, child abuse, or neglect. They may also be asked to examine evidence from crime scenes to help determine if a crime has been committed.
In addition to providing expert testimony in criminal cases, forensic pathologists may also be asked to provide expert opinions in civil cases such as medical malpractice or negligence lawsuits. In these cases, they may be asked to provide opinions on the possible cause of death or injury and whether any negligence was involved in the incident.
