Medical Recordkeeping
The reasons to keep accurate medical records are numerous, but some of the most important are to ensure that subsequent treating physicians have correct information upon which to make diagnoses, to prevent erroneous diagnoses, to prevent unnecessary and dangerous testing, to prevent unnecessary and potential harmful treatment, and to ensure timely treatment/prevent harm or death from tardy treatment. Certainly, there are also billing “truthfulness” reasons and community health protection reasons, as well as others. The failure to keep accurate medical records (or timely correct upon becoming aware) can not only deprive a patient of his ability to be treated promptly and correctly, but also, also deprive a patient of his ability to recover damages caused by a doctor’s deviations from standard of care.
