Charcot Joint and Amputation
Chronic neuropathy can result in Charcot joint, which is a destruction, deformity, and change in the structure of the ankle joint, predisposing it to ulceration. There is also increased weakness of the bones comprising the joint, and tendency to fracture this joint. There is a 12-fold increased risk of amputation with Charcot joint involvement. The only known treatment to halt or reverse progression of diabetic neuropathy is tight glycemic control. Left uncontrolled, Charcot joint can lead to amputation.
