Mold-Related Irritant Respiratory Disorders
Irritant respiratory conditions from airborne mold exposure in a restricted indoor space are not unusual. Fungal-generated volatile organic compounds (VOCs) may be relevant. VOCs are low molecular weight organic compounds released into the air as a consequence of normal fungal metabolism. They include alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, sulfurous and nitrogenous compounds, and other hydrocarbons. Airborne VOCs are responsible for the musty disagreeable odor associated with fungal contamination.
