Skin Lacerations
Lacerations of the skin are a type of non-sharp trauma that involves tearing or ripping of the skin, as opposed to an incision which is caused by cutting with a sharp object. In most cases, lacerations are caused by a blunt object striking the skin but occasionally, as in this case, the laceration may occur via other mechanisms. Regardless of mechanism, there must be sufficient force to overcome the tensile strength of the most dense and tough layer of the skin, the dermis. The dermis is the most resilient layer of the skin due to collagen, the primary supportive structural component of the dermis.
