Cardiac Contusion Causing Ventricular Damage

Contusion of the heart usually occurs as a result of a direct blow to the sternum and is most commonly seen in a deceleration injury in which the sternum strikes the steering wheel. The chamber of the heart most commonly injured is the most anterior of the chambers, the right ventricle, not the left ventricle, and certainly not the posterior wall of that left ventricle.
